ABOUT MASON CITY

POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Mason City Police Department has a full-time staff of 48 sworn officers. The department is organized into three Patrol Divisions and a Criminal Investigations Division. As the largest law enforcement agency in our area, we play a leading role in the region including the regional Special Operations Group (SOG) and Regional Drug Task Force. Opportunities exist for periodic rotating special assignments to the various divisions mentioned above or as a School Resource Officer. Specialized training is available in many other skills. We are a progressive department that is willing to try new ideas and approaches.

HIRING PROCESS
  • April 26th – Application period ends.
  • Written POST and Physical Agility testing on the morning of May 6th
  • Interviews the afternoon of May 6th following testing
  • 5/9/2023 – Background checks underway
  • Early June – Conditional job offers made
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE
  • 21 years of age or older at time of hire.
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid State driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Not be addicted to drugs or alcohol (Iowa Code 400.17).
  • No felony convictions.
  • No disqualifying misdemeanors within the last seven years.
  • Satisfy Iowa Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) physical and vision requirements.
  • Pass the written POST test and ILEA-required physical fitness test (waived for Iowa-Certified Officers).
  • Pass a post-offer physical/drug test, polygraph, and psychological evaluation.
  • Live within 30 miles of Mason City within six months of hire.  (30 mile map)
BENEFITS
  • Starting salary $62,700 per year. Increased pay for Iowa certified officers up to $83,000 per year.
  • $5,000 Hiring Bonus for Certified officers.
  • Relocation package if live outside the area. Up to $9,000 for certified officers and $5,000 for all others.
  • $2,000 annual stipend if you own and live in your home within Mason City.
  • Competitive vacation and sick leave. Additional vacation for Iowa certified officers.
