POLICE DEPARTMENT
The Mason City Police Department has a full-time staff of 48 sworn officers. The department is organized into three Patrol Divisions and a Criminal Investigations Division. As the largest law enforcement agency in our area, we play a leading role in the region including the regional Special Operations Group (SOG) and Regional Drug Task Force. Opportunities exist for periodic rotating special assignments to the various divisions mentioned above or as a School Resource Officer. Specialized training is available in many other skills. Prepare for State Required Written & Physical Testing
Take this time to prepare for our next written and physical testing event. Candidates have the option to purchase a POST study guide or practice exam HERE. Review your physical fitness standards for your gender/age HERE.

Written & Physical Testing
This is the day for you to show us all the hard work you have put in to preparing! After applying candidates receive an email with testing details, including the testing location and time. We will conduct physical and written testing in the morning.

Interview
Candidates passing both the physical and written testing will participate in interviews immediately following testing. Iowa certified officers and candidates using a prior POST exam score will be expedited to interviews following the physical testing.

Thorough background checks will be conducted for all candidates passing the interview process.

Final Hiring Steps
If offered a position with the Mason City Police Department, candidates will undergo a polygraph, MMPI testing, and must pass a medical examination that includes – drug testing, hearing and eye exams, and cardiac testing.

Once all pre-employment requirements are met you will be scheduled to begin orientation and participate in the badge swearing in ceremony. Welcome aboard!
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE
- 21 years of age or older at time of hire.
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid State driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
- Not be addicted to drugs or alcohol (Iowa Code 400.17).
- No felony convictions.
- No disqualifying misdemeanors within the last seven years.
- Satisfy Iowa Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) physical and vision requirements.
- Pass the written POST test and ILEA-required physical fitness test (waived for Iowa-Certified Officers).
- Pass a post-offer physical/drug test, polygraph, and psychological evaluation.
- Live within 30 miles of Mason City within six months of hire. (30 mile map)
WHAT WE OFFER
- $69,000 starting salary for entry-level and up to $91,800 for Iowa-certified officers.
- Up to $9,000 relocation package.
- $5,000 HIRING BONUS for certified officers.
- $2,000 residency stipend for officers living in Mason City.
- Up to $720 annually for college credit pay.
